What is CommuniTea?

CommuniTea is a special morning tea hosted by Livit Disability Support to celebrate AAC Awareness Month and shine a light on all the different ways people communicate.

October 10 is Key Word Sign Awareness Day, inspired by the ten fingers we use to sign, making it the perfect day to join in and try something new. AAC Awareness Month is all about recognising that everyone has the right to communicate and helping people understand the many ways communication can happen.

At this fun, hands-on event, our clients and teams:

• Learn and try key word signs, communication boards, and other AAC tools

• Meet new people and play games while practicing different ways to communicate

• Celebrate inspiring stories from our community.

FAQs

Our event is for our clients and teams, but anyone can host their own CommuniTea. The event should be for anyone who wants to learn more about AAC and celebrate all the different ways people communicate.

Not at all! All you need is a willingness to learn. The whole purpose of this event is to learn and celebrate communication together, no matter your level of understanding. Games can include learning key word signs, using communication boards, so you can learn as you go.

Yes! We encourage schools, workplaces, and community groups to host their own morning tea to celebrate AAC Awareness Month and learn more about all the different and wonderful ways people can communicate.

Just a space, some drinks and snacks, and a willingness to try out AAC tools. We can provide guidance, tips, and resources to make it easy and fun.

Yes! You can use the keyword sign charts, communication boards, and ideas for games and activities on this page. Reach out through our contact page or email, and we can share tips, materials, and support to make your morning tea a success.

Great question. We recommend offering a few different ways for people to join in on the fun. Activities can include signing, using communication boards, drawing, playing board games and so on. Make sure the space is comfortable, have some dedicated quiet areas and just be patient and encouraging. Better yet, ask your attendees what they want and need to make sure everyone can enjoy.
